A Directory is searchable database of website pages, which are reviewed, selected, and categorized by human beings.

Talking of Major directories, “Yahoo” and “Dmoz ODP (open directory project)” are the Major directories on the web. Yahoo is paid while ODP is free but requires proper category submission, and editor approval.
Finding listing in any of the two will boost your Search engine rankings as well as traffic from these directories.
Dmoz (The Open Directory)
This is web’s one of the biggest and free directory run by a team of editors. Getting a link in this directory is more difficult then any other. You have to submit your site in proper category and then the editors will review your site. This may take some weeks, but don’t keep submitting your site here.
To get listed here go to most appropriate category of this directory here at http://www.dmoz.com. In that category you will see “Suggest URL” and you have to click and fill the form. If you get listed in Dmoz, that means you get listed in Google search.
Yahoo Directory
Yahoo directory is also reviewed by group of editors. This is a well categorized directory, and not free.
For commercial websites one has to pay $299/year for a listing (including affiliate sites).
If you have non-commercial site then you can get it for free (although there is no guarantee that some ill review your site). The best way to get listed is to pay the 299$/year charge.
Experts say that this will boost your search engine rankings in Yahoo and Google.
To suggest your site, go to most appropriate category in http://dir.yahoo.com. See for “suggest your site” and follow the instruction to get listed.

Is Your Site Is Not Getting Listed?
If your site is not getting listed in search engines, look what you have done wrong with your site. Did you copy the content, linking with bad neighborhood etc. Correct whatever you have done wrong.
If you are not getting indexed specially in Google, read their webmasters guidelines, and follow what they are telling you to do and what not.
